The Victorian Movement
The
Victorian movement or the “Victorian poetry movement” was a 19th century poetic period that took place
in England during the reign of the Victorian Era (1827-1901). The Victorian
movement literally “describes things and events in the reign of Queen Victoria.”
The Victorian age lasted a couple years that it consisted of several different periods.
This period was an age of power and absurdity. The Victorian era created
a transition between the writers from the romantic period to those from the 20th century. Overall, Charles Dickens can be defined as an author and poet from the Victorian movement. Along with Dickens, other poets that were from the Victorian era are: Oscar Wilde, Elizabeth Gaskell, Thomas
Hardy, etc…
Charles Dickens can be said to be the most famous
writer during the Victorian period because the characters from his novels take on “a life of their own beyond the page.” The Pickwick Papers was Dickens first real novel and was written when he was
about twenty-five years old. This novel was described as an overnight success
because of the use of his dark themes. Overall, Dickens became the most well
known Victorian poet. The Victorian Era can also be described as the movement
where many writers and poets decided to write children’s novels. Charles
Dickens was one of many writers that decided to take on this task. He wrote A
Childs History of England, which was a type of novel that was directed towards young audiences as well as A Christmas
Carol.
The Victorian movement has been so influential
that it has influenced writers from the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
Some Canadian Victorian authors are Sussana Moodie, and Catherine Parr Traill.
The Australian writers can be described as Adam Lindsay Gordon and Banjo Paterson.
The only problem with the classification of Victorian literature is that
there is a great difference between the early works of the period and the later works, which had more in common with the writers
of the Edwardian period, and many writers straddle this divide. More authors and novelits were H.G. Wells, Bram Stoker, and
Joseph Conrad all wrote some of their important works during Victoria's reign but the sensibility of their writing is frequently
regarded as Edwardian.
The Victorian era was also
an important period where the develoment of science was taking place. One of
the particular novels that was written during the Victorian Era was Charles Darwins On The Origin of Species which was a book
that contained is theory of evolution.
