Charles Dickens was a Victorian poet who was influenced by many writers that were interested in social issues.  After becoming one of the most famous writers and poets during the Victorian Period, Dickens influenced many others to write about their true beliefs and thoughts.  Charles Dickens influenced Mark Twain, George Orwell, James Joyce, Emily Dickinson, and Ralph Emerson through his constant utilization of symbolism and imagery in his works. 

            James Joyce was an Irish poet and writer who is defined as one of the most influential writers of the 20^th century.  Joyce is best known for his novel Ulysses and Dubliners.  Joyce’s writing style is similar to Dickens writing style.  His writing style consists of a naturalistic nature, which involves the writing of mysterious events throughout the context of the novel.   Dickens influence on Joyce is apparent in his description of Mrs. Purefoy’s character.  She is characterized as a thankful and joyous woman who is glad to have her new baby.  His description of this woman portrays Dickens utilization of portraying thankfulness on a specific character. 

            Another author who Dickens impacted was Oscar Wilde who was an Irish poet, novelist, playwright and writer.  Wilde is most known for his Victorian playwrights.  His popularity was a huge impact in his downfall, which led to his imprisonment for being a “homosexual” and buggery.  Wilde was strongly influenced by Dickens utilization of symbolism that led to the upbringing of his novel, A Picture of Dorian Gray.  Today, Wilde is known as an iconic figure in modern popular culture.  He is known as a “wit and as an archetype of gay identity.” 

            George Orwell was a British author and journalist who is noted as a novelist, critic, and political commentator.  He is best known for his novels Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty Four, novels that concentrate on fascism, communism and totalitarianism.  Orwell’s Animal Farm is one of his novels that reflect Dickens influence because of the complicated social issues that are represented throughout the context of the novel.  The social issues are implemented through characters that are pigs, cows, dogs, and horses.  Orwell has had major impact on recent authors and novelists from the 20^th century.  Orwell’s writings primarily focused on the importance of honesty and clear language that also reflects one of Dickens main goals as a writer.  Overall, Orwell was influenced by Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities.  This novel represented a historical problem in a fictionalized nature where Orwell partook in the same writing style in Animal Farm, and 1984.
